Slingerland Artist Maple Snare
The Professional Choice of Yesteryear!
Back in the day, Slingerland made the most sought after drums in the music scene. The sound was vintage 60’s and perfect for the early rock of that decade, and everything else that was evolving, from rockabilly to country & western, to funk. The Slingerland Artist Maple Snare Drum was a gem, and continues to be sought after by collectors and those who want to play a pure classic. This line was sturdy, robust, with a deep, penetrating sound to match. Some units feature thicker, fewer plies, like the 3-ply models. Buddy Rick preferred single ply models to deliver his famously crisp and bright tones. Fantastic articulation and clear attack were the trademark characteristics of the Artist Maples, enhanced, of course, by the choice of heads.
Classic features on the Slingerland Artist Maple Snare drums included the Zoomatic strainer, a collector’s item itself, and Sound Edge rims. Fine tune tensioning allows for tones from tight and sharp to loose and juicy. The sound delivered was powerful and woody, not as sweet as later, multi-layered maple snares. This is due, in the 3-ply models to other woods like mahogany and birch being used for the outer layers, with maple constituting only the inner ply. A variety of vintage 1960’s finishes grace these snares, along with a mix of hardware styles. These drums are still great to play, and they are proving to be an instrument with some solid investment value to collectors. Prices range from $179 to over $450 for mint condition models.
